Mike Huckabee Has Rocks In His Head But Wants Them Upside Yours

November 20, 2008

So, Mike Huckabee was on The View the other day spouting off about how he didn’t think gay people had a civil rights struggle on their hands because black people were victims of violence during their struggle, and gay people aren’t.

Really, Mike? What number of cracked skulls are required to fit your definition? Did the Japanese-Americans in internment camps meet it? How about women getting the right to vote?

Suffering violence should not be a prerequisite for equality, but here’s a list of gay folks who certainly have suffered and/or died because of who they are. Violent enough for you, Mike?

Last week, Tiesh Cannon, Syracuse, NY, was shot and killed with a .22 rifle while sitting in a car for being gay. Her brother, also gay, was shot at the same time.

A Memphis transgendered woman (born a woman with male physiology), named Duanna Johnson was beaten by cops and then murdered weeks later by an unknown assailant.

In August, 18-year old Michael Cause died from wounds incurred by gay-bashing thugs in U.K.

Jane Currie and Anji Dimitriou were beaten while dropping off their children at school. Their children had to watch them be bloodied to the point of needing stitches, and so did the children of the man who attacked them as well as several other parents and their children.

The day of a rally in support of Jane and Anji, two gay teens were beaten for being gay at a party to which they were invited.

Then there’s Todd Metrokin of DC who along with his friends got jumped by a bunch of thugs in Adams-Morgan. (Warning, pictures not for the squeamish).

It’s ironic that Huckabee chose this week to cock off something so insane since it is the national week of remembrance for people murdered for being transgendered.

The above was just the result of a five-minute search. There are scores more. The list of victims is much longer for this year alone. Every week I hear another story, so spare me Huckabee. In your mind there would never be enough violence to make ours a justifiable civil rights struggle, because people with your mindset read the Bible in a way that justifies killing people like us. I won’t look for you to stand up for the safety of gay people anytime soon.

Sadly, Huckabee is only giving voice to a growing reality. The closer we get to winning this battle, the more threatened cavemen like Huckabee feel. And, as a result, the more violent towards us they become. While I would like to imagine it will be otherwise, I expect our world to become more violent for gay people rather than less in the near future. Something for Mike Huckabee to look forward to, I suppose.

Mike Huckabee’s An Idiot

May 16, 2008

Mike Huckabee is such a dumbass.

CBS reports that he joked about Obama being shot at during today’s NRA meeting in Louisville, KY:

Mike Huckabee, speaking later in the program, was interrupted by a loud noise. “That was Barack Obama,” he said. “He just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak and someone pointed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”

Maybe Huckabee’s son finally made it through an airport x-ray machine with that Glock he’s been trying to tote onboard in his carry on.

I suspect that Huckabee is so used to making inappropriate remarks and jokes, in private of course where in his mind I’m sure they don’t count, that he doesn’t even realize how not funny that joke was. But if we needed one more example of how mean-spirited the GOP is these days, I guess we have it.

The Obama campaign ignored him, which was smart.

Part of me prays they make McCain take Huckabee as a running mate.

GrowingSense is Back

December 31, 2007

At least for awhile, and you have Mike Huckabee to thank for it, since the thought of him being president sends me over the edge.

Mike Huckabee scares the bejeebies out of me. He doesn’t pander to the religious right. He IS the religious right.

Here’s what he says about equal treatment of gay families, [I put what I hear when he talks in brackets]:

”It’s not because I don’t like them,” [It’s important to me that you think that I like them, even though I can’t say that I do,] Huckabee said of gay people.

”It’s because I like even more the idea that the heart and soul, the essence of our civilization is in the family. [Gay families are heartless and soulless and have nothing positive to contribute to civilization.]

“It’s not in the government. It’s not even in some institution, not even the church.” [We could get along without government and the church as long as we only support families headed by one man and one graciously submitting woman, even though in much of the world and in the Bible the accepted family model was one man and as many graciously submitting women as he could afford, unless you are talking about the apostle Paul and Jesus who believed remaining single was actually the more godly option.]

”When you mess with the design, you end up messing with results,” [We should still be hammering with rocks and cooking over fires started by the beating of two stones together. If a design works well once, it should never be changed or adjusted to account for new information, and there should never be any variations of that design, ever, no matter who it benefits,] he added.

”We can’t afford to do that. That’s why you will never hear me waver.” [I’m proud to be a 21st century Orval Faubus. I make a point of ignoring research that indicates kids who are fostered and adopted into same-sex families do just as well as other children; research that judges who I appointed found compelling enough to keep gay adoption and fostering legal in Arkansas when I was governor. I will never voice a change in opinion within earshot of potential voters.]

(Huckabee’s actual quotes are from an interview with The Advocate)

If you think he doesn’t have a hell-bound snowball’s chance of winning in 2008, think again. He sounds liberal enough for democrats who don’t pay attention to equality issues, and, of course, he is still for all practical purposes a Baptist preacher, which pleases the “I don’t care if he doesn’t have a foreign policy as long as he says he loves Jesus and isn’t Mormon or Catholic” crowd.Box Turtle Bulletin has more of his candid “compassionate conservative” thoughts.

Anyway, at least GrowingSense had a vacation.
